Season simply with sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper to allow the natural flavour of the meat to shine.
Cooking Guide
For the best eating experience, we recommend serving zebra medium-rare to medium.
Medium-Rare (Recommended)
Cook over a very hot pan or grill for 2½–3 minutes per side.
Internal temperature: 54–57°C
Medium
Cook for 3–4 minutes per side.
Internal temperature: 60–63°C
Avoid cooking beyond medium, as the meat is naturally lean and may become less tender.
Resting
Allow the steaks to rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
This helps retain their natural juices and ensures every bite is beautifully tender.
Chef's Tips
- Cook over high heat to create a rich caramelised crust.
- Turn only once during cooking.
- Slice across the grain for maximum tenderness.
- Finish with a small knob of butter while resting for extra richness, if desired.
Serving Inspiration
Serve your Zebra Steaks with:
- Jimmy's Steakhouse Sauce
- Robertson's Braai & Grill Seasoning
- Mrs H.S. Ball's Original Chutney
- Creamy mashed potato
- Chargrilled vegetables
Wine Pairing
A South African Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot pairs beautifully with zebra, complementing its rich flavour while enhancing its naturally sweet finish.
Braai Master's Tip 🇿🇦
A hot fire is your best friend when cooking zebra. Sear the outside quickly to create a beautiful crust, then allow the steak to rest before slicing. Keeping the centre beautifully pink will showcase the meat at its absolute best.
