No 1 South African Shop was founded in 2003 by Sarah Prisgrove, with a vision to bring a true taste of South Africa to the UK and create a place where people could reconnect with the food, flavours and memories of home.

What started as a small indipendently-run business has grown into a much-loved destination for the South African community and food lovers across the UK. In 2025, the business was proudly passed down to Sarah’s niece, Madison Love, continuing its legacy as a female-run independent business.

Today, we remain deeply passionate about celebrating South African culture, supporting South African brands and creating more than just a shop — we aim to create an experience. Whether you’re visiting our Christchurch store or ordering online, we want every customer to feel welcomed, nostalgic and connected to home.

We carefully source the best South African products we can find, from iconic everyday favourites to premium speciality goods, with a strong focus on quality, authenticity and customer experience. From freshly sliced biltong and droëwors to pantry staples, sweets, drinks and braai essentials, every product is chosen with care.

As a women-led business, we are especially passionate about championing and supporting women wherever possible, including the incredible women behind many South African brands, producers and communities.
