Best Cooking Methods
South African Cheese Russians can be cooked on:
- Charcoal braai
- Barbecue
- Grill
- Frying pan
- Air fryer
Cooking Guide
Pan Fry
Cook over a medium heat for 14–16 minutes, turning regularly until evenly browned and cooked through.
Grill or Braai
Cook over medium-hot coals for 14–16 minutes, turning frequently to achieve an even golden finish.
Air Fryer
Cook at 190°C for 14–16 minutes, turning halfway through.
Ensure the Russians reach a core temperature of 75°C before serving.
Resting
Allow the Russians to rest for 2–3 minutes before serving. This gives the melted cheese a chance to settle slightly before cutting into them.
Chef's Tips
- Cook over a steady medium heat to prevent the cheese from escaping too quickly.
- Turn regularly for an evenly browned, crisp exterior.
- Avoid piercing the casing, as this allows the delicious juices and melted cheese to escape.
- Serve immediately while the cheese is still wonderfully soft and gooey.
Serving Inspiration
Enjoy your Cheese Russians with:
- Fresh hot dog rolls
- Mrs H.S. Ball's Original Chutney
- Jimmy's Steakhouse Sauce
- Tomato sauce or mustard
- Simba Chips on the side
Wine Pairing
A lightly chilled South African Chenin Blanc or a fruity Pinotage pairs beautifully with the rich pork and beef flavours and creamy cheese filling.
Braai Master's Tip 🇿🇦
Cook over medium-hot coals and resist the temptation to rush them. Slow, even cooking allows the cheese to melt perfectly inside while creating a beautifully caramelised, golden-brown casing.
