Best Cooking Methods
Garlic Butter Chicken Flattie is perfect for:
- Charcoal braai
- Barbecue
- Oven roasting
- Air fryer (if size allows)
Cooking Guide
Braai or Barbecue
Cook over medium, indirect heat for 40–50 minutes, turning occasionally.
Finish skin-side down over direct heat for 2–3 minutes to achieve beautifully crispy skin.
Oven
Preheat oven to 190°C (170°C Fan).
Place on a roasting tray and cook for 45–55 minutes, or until cooked through.
Air Fryer
If your air fryer is large enough, cook at 180°C for 35–40 minutes, turning halfway through.
The chicken is cooked when the thickest part of the breast reaches a core temperature of 75°C and the juices run clear.
Resting
Allow the chicken to rest for 5–10 minutes before carving to keep it wonderfully juicy.
Chef's Tips
- Bring the chicken to room temperature before cooking for more even results.
- Cook mostly over indirect heat to prevent the garlic butter from burning.
- Baste with any remaining marinade during cooking for extra flavour.
- Finish over direct heat to crisp the skin beautifully.
Serving Inspiration
Serve your Garlic Butter Chicken Flattie with:
- Braai potato salad
- Fresh green salad
- Garlic bread
- Mrs H.S. Ball's Original Chutney
Wine Pairing
A chilled South African Chenin Blanc or Sauvignon Blanc pairs beautifully with the rich garlic butter flavours, balancing the buttery richness while complementing the succulent chicken.
Braai Master's Tip 🇿🇦
A flattie is at its best when cooked slowly over medium coals. Give it time, keep the lid closed where possible, and finish over direct heat to create irresistibly crispy, golden skin while keeping the meat beautifully moist.
